TOMORROW – SLV Museum Opening Reception for Bear With Us

2015-02 SLVM Bear With UsWhat: Opening Reception for the museums new exhibit Bear With Us

When: Sunday, February 15th, 2015 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm

Where: San Lorenzo Valley Museum

12547 Highway 9, Boulder Creek, CA 95006
(831) 338-8382

In the late 1700s, the San Francisco peninsula was a wilderness, and home to large numbers of grizzlies. The abundance of food was shared between the hierarchy of wildlife and the native peoples; there was plenty for all. In just a few decades, this would change.

Confrontations between man and bear often resulted in death or serious injury. By the late-1800s there were few grizzlies left here and by 1900, grizzlies, once prolific, had been hunted to extinction.

This exhibition tells the stories of bear encounters, both grizzlies and black bears, in the Santa Cruz area from the late 1700s to the present day and reminds us that often our intolerance can lead to an unrecoverable and regrettable loss.

The exhibition includes hands-on activities for young visitors and interactive elements to engage visitors of all ages.

Exhibition Sponsored by: The Robinson Family, Travis Tree Professionals, A Team Tree Service, Christianson Tree Experts Co., Pacific Mountain Tree Service, Big Creek Lumber, Jeff Hill and Sons. Thanks to Bay Photo for their support in the printing of the exhibition panels.

Opening Reception Sponsored by: Big Basin Vineyards and New Leaf Community Market, Boulder Creek.

Emily Ann Cress
August 1, 1928 – January 17, 2015

Obituary

Boulder Creek and the Santa Cruz community have lost one of their finest. Emily Ann Cress passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz at the age of 86. She was born in Santa Cruz to Abraham Locatelli and Margherita Zanardi who were Italian immigrants. She was raised in Boulder Creek and remained a resident her entire life.

Emily graduated from Boulder Creek High School and attended Smith’s School of Business in Santa Cruz. She was a tireless worker and for over seventy-two years was the face that everyone knew at Johnnie’s Super Market. It is an amazing and remarkable truth that Emily worked almost every day at one place since the age of fourteen. Her dedication was unprecedented, and anybody who ever lived or worked in Boulder Creek probably knew of Emily.

Described by many as Boulder Creek’s unofficial historian, Emily remained actively involved in her community throughout her entire life. Over the years her club affiliations included the Lyons Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Fire Department, the Boulder Creek Golf Club, the Boulder Creek Museum, and the Italian Catholic Federation of Santa Cruz. Emily was also a member of the Marconi Club and enjoyed the club’s many bus trips to various places and the fellowship of friends. She never forgot Boulder Creek High School and every year joined with some of her classmates to celebrate their lifelong connections. She loved the company of family and friends and always remembered a face.

Beginning in 1888 there has been a handful of people responsible for collecting and reporting the annual rainfall data for Boulder Creek. Emily continued this work over fifteen years ago for her late husband George “Hoot” Cress. It has benefited the community of Boulder Creek for over a century.

Emily always enjoyed a good meal, especially at Scopazzi’s in Boulder Creek. She was a wonderful cook and always generous in her gifts of food. She was an avid sports fan and in her younger years enjoyed playing golf and swimming. She also enjoyed her yard which was always maintained meticulously.

Emily is survived by her brother Andrew J. Locatelli; sister-in-law Lois A. Locatelli; brother-in-law Charles F. Hughes; nephews James A. Hughes, David A. Hughes, Andrew J. Hughes, Mark J. Locatelli, and Tom R. Locatelli; niece Janet M. Hughes; and extended family and friends who will all miss her genuine and enthusiastic energy for life.

She was preceded in death by her parents Abraham Locatelli and Margherita Zanardi; her loving husband George Loughmiller “Hoot” Cress; and her sister Marie Locatelli Hughes.

Recitation of the Rosary and the Mass of the Resurrection for Emily Ann Cress will both be held in Boulder Creek. The rosary will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 7 p.m. Friends may pay their respects at a viewing to be held at the church on Sunday evening beginning at 5 p.m. The mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Monday, January 26, 2015 beginning at 10 a.m. The committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz. A reception to celebrate Emily will follow at Scopazzi’s Italian Restaurant in Boulder Creek. It will start at 1:30 p.m., and all friends and family are welcome and encouraged to attend. Any kind acts of charity can be made in Emily’s memory to the Boulder Creek Historical Society.

Emily Ann Cress was one-of-a-kind. We were blessed to have her in our lives for 86 years. She will be missed by family and friends although her spirit will always be present and will remain a part of the Boulder Creek community forever.

IN MEMORIAM: Jack Kuehl

2015-01 Jack KuehlJanuary 18th Boulder Creek Fire Department lost one of our long time members. Fire Commissioner Jack Kuehl passed away at his home surrounded by family. Commissioner Kuehl first joined the fire department in the 1960’s and has remained a part of our family since then. Below is the obituary provided by his son, former BCFD Lieutenant Steve Kuehl.

Obituary

Jack Douglas Kuehl passed away January 18th at his residence in Boulder Creek after his year long battle with cancer at the age of 80. His wife Renee was at his side.

Born in Flint, Michigan, Jack graduated from high school in Illinois and then attended Michigan State. He moved to California in 1960 and shortly thereafter started his lifelong career of building homes. First in Aptos, then in Boulder Creek Jack established his family home in Santa Cruz County. One of his largest building projects was working with Mr. Culligan to construct the original 100 condominiums at the Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club in 1967. His current home of Meadowood was built in 1973 where five family generations have since resided.

Jack joined the Boulder Creek Fire Department in the 1960s as a firefighter for several years, later returning as fire commissioner in 1991 where he maintained this ranking until the week of his passing.

Jack is survived by his wife of 50 years, Renee, children Diane Ruby of Chico, David Philleo of Scotts Valley, Jerryne King of Scotts Valley, John Kuehl of Monterey and Steve Kuehl of Boulder Creek. He has three sisters, Phyllis Starkey in Florida, Marsha Velders in Illinois and Karen Barworth in Colorado. He also has nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Jack requested that any donations in his memory be made to the Boulder Creek Fire Department or Hospice of Santa Cruz County. At Jack’s request no services are being planned. If anyone has any remembrances Renee has asked for those people to please contact her.

BC Elementary CLOSED Tomorrow

IMG_8674What: Boulder Creek Elementary School is CLOSED

When: Thursday, December 11th

Dear Families,

Due to further information about the upcoming storm and to protect the safety of students, staff, and families, we have decided to cancel school, as well as the Book Fair, this Thursday, December 11th.

The forecast calls for 8-10 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour, and all available forecasts agree that this storm could be the worst we’ve experienced in the last six years. By letting you know in advance, hopefully you will have the time you need to make alternate child care arrangements or plan to take the day off from work, if possible.
We normally do not preemptively call for a school closure, but under these circumstances, we feel it is in the best interests of our entire school community. Please continue to check your email, phone messages and radio (KSCO and KUSP) for updates just in case we need to be closed on Friday as well.

Stay warm and safe!
