For a synopsis of the current state of Verizon’s proposed cell tower right in downtown Boulder Creek, click HERE to read Steve Poikonen’s article at the Mountain Bulletin.
From the article:
“My information was based on a statement Chris Currier had made, who stated he no longer supported the tower and expected the application to be withdrawn. Verizon has taken the position that “Mr. Currier is in a contractual arrangement, and Verizon, not Mr. Currier, will decide whether or not to withdraw.” ‘

Firefighters in Santa Cruz County have fought over a dozen human-caused fires along the Highway 9 corridor over the past month, and officials are asking the local mountain bike community to be especially vigilant for suspicious characters who may be intentionally setting these fires.
Henry Cowell State Park Ranger Gary Brennan sent a note to the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz asking cyclists and other trail users to look out for fires in the area. He says, “Henry Cowell State Park has been the site of over 12 vegetation fires. Investigators have examined all of these fires and determined that while several different causes were to blame, all were human caused. Some were intentionally set, some were the result of accidents but a majority were the result of illegal campfires left unattended.”
“I know none of your mountain bikers use the area,” he says with a nudge and a wink regarding the popular poached trails in the state park, “but we need all of the eyes we can get to catch the person or persons responsible for the fires. Report anything that is unusual such as illegal campsites in the park, individuals starting fires or acting suspiciously.”
Brennan asks that you call the arson tip line at (800) 468-4408 if you know anything about a possible arson fire. If you see a fire that is out of control or you see someone setting a fire, immediately call 911.
The fires so far have been relatively small, though challenging to fight because of the rugged terrain in this area. On Tuesday, fire crews staged at Twin Gates on Empire Grade Road, drove as far as they could on the Chinquapa Fire Road towards Pogonip, then hiked through poison oak with their fire fighting gear to fight the blaze creeping uphill from Highway 9. The steep terrain combined with an especially dry year in this area and a heavy fuel load can quickly lead to a catastrophic fire.

August 12, 2013 Boulder Creek, CA. -Efforts to get the Boulder Creek radio station on the air by the August 11th deadline have succeeded. The non-profit organization, Common Frequency, was tasked with installing the antenna at a site on Bear Creek Road and hooking up a computer to broadcast a continuous loop of content until the local radio outfit Boulder Creek Community Radio(BCCR) can begin broadcasting its own original content. The station, KBCZ at 90.1 FM has been silent for over a year and if it didn’t go live by the August 11 deadline it would have gone dark, without a license for the foreseeable future. The sale of the station still has some hurdles to overcome and will not be fully purchased until sometime in January 2014. Interim Director Tim Welch said, “We are thrilled to hear the station is broadcasting and to know the FCC broadcasting license did not expire. We are optimistic that we will now be able to purchase the license and move forward with setting up the infrastructure for what will be Boulder Creek Community Radio, a non-commercial, educational (NCE) station that will serve to further unite this great community.”

The meeting lasted 47 minutes. There was the agenda with 33 pages of documentation covering such things as expenses and revenue for July, as well as news and notices the board had received in June and July. These included tems such as the Communicator, Notice of Public Hearing for the Cell Tower, New Mountain Echo, and Capri News. It also included upcoming meetings:
California State Parks, Habitat Conservation Fund (HCF) Technical Assistance Meeting
Wednesday 8/14, 9:00am – 11:00am, in Sacramento
California State Parks, Recreational Trails Program Advisory Board Meeting
Tuesday 8/27, 10:00am – 12:00noon, in Sacramento
The final part was the fiscal budget for 2013 / 2014. The budget is usually around $200,000 a year, this year it is $251,295 which was approved by unanimous consent. They are hoping this increased portion of the budget will be covered by new forms of revenue.
The radio memorandum was signed earlier this week and on Sunday at midnight should start broadcasting at 90.1 KBEC. This will fulfill FCC requirements to keep the channel going. The Rec & Park board hopes to have the radio station up and broadcasting sometime in December or January.
The following items are still pending:
1) Strategic Planning by subcommittee meeting 8/27
2) Master Plan meeting in October, date still not set
3) Dog Park, this is currently being discussed and planned by members of the community. They are hoping to meet sometime in August. It is not yet in the Rec & Park Boards hands yet, still very much a citizens movement and in the early planning stages.
Possible changes for 4th of July next year:
For food next year the Rec & Park department may go with a vender instead of doing it all themselves like they did this year. This would put less stress on employees and allow them to focus on other things that need their attention.
Final note:
Castle Rock Park is beautiful this time of year, they are having their next Historical Talk Sunday 10/27/2013
Adam Burgess and Rachel Wooster spoke in front of the Board of Supervisors this morning around 9am. They presented the opposition’s combined research including code violations to them. It is going to be broadcast tomorrow 8/7 at 6pm on channel 26/72.
