On Sunday May 24th, The Boulder Creek Recreation District will be hosting a fun day at Junction Park. Great bands will be throwing down tunes, Boulder Creek Brewery will be catering the food, there is art to browse and buy and of course cold beer and wine. Come sit on the grass or dip your toes in the river and enjoy this beautiful life in the mountains! Proceeds benefit Boulder Creek Recreation Programs!
Below is a Q&A our current supervisor Bruce McPherson completed during his campaign. Dated October, 12, 2012.
We’ve taken the liberty of highlighting some of his key statements. As crime increases in Boulder Creek making it a less hospitable town for commerce, tourists and families, we gotta wonder…… Bruce… where are you man?

Why do you want to be Supervisor?
Simply put, I believe that public service is what many of us should
aspire to. Our democracy, and our governments won’t work unless we,
as citizens get and remain involved in serving our community and
working to make our democracy more vibrant, sustaining and
representative. My family has been here since the 1840s, and we have
both served the community, and helped build it. I want to continue
helping my neighbors, and serving my community because I am fulfilled
by the experience, I believe I can do a good job, and I enjoy working
with people and finding new solutions and ways to make our lives and
communities better. This will be a full-time job for me. I’m
dedicated to the 5th District and to Santa Cruz County.
How will you help Boulder Creek?
I will continue to “deliver”, just as I had when I was elected to be
your Assemblyman and State Senator. I know that the San Lorenzo
Valley and Boulder Creek haven’t received adequate funding and other
resources from the County for years; We have clear needs to better
serve those who live in Boulder Creek; better roads and road
maintenance, ensuring that our watershed and river water remain
healthy, working Valley-wide to find solutions to our air-quality
standards, and building a bigger, and better ‘eco-tourism’ local
economy based on our environment, parks and rural attractions. I
have found ‘new’ state money to help ourl fire departments, I have
fought for bond funds to improve our local parks. I have been a leader
in class-size reductions and changing local bond elections that
allowed passage of the SLV school bond that funded the new library and
performing arts building.
What are the obstacles facing Boulder Creek and how will you address them?
There are a series of obstacles, some of which are physical and
geological. In an interesting turn, those obstacles are also some of
our most significant strengths, so we need to continue to enhance our
image, enhance our natural resources and carefully adhere to our
slow-growth and stringent environmental regulations so we preserve our
strengths. Resources, as in “money” is the other obsticale, and that
challenge is getting worse, not better during this economic downtourn.
Community participation, volunteerism and synergy and cooperation can
help, but – “we” need the money that previously flowed into other
parts of Santa Cruz County to improve our downtown, increase sheriff
and public safety programs, improve our local parks, schools and begin
planning to implement those elements of the Boulder Creek Town Plan
that are achievable in the short run.
Why do you think you are the best person for this appointment?
The “County” as a government entity is both an official extension of
the State, and it is our “local government” for unincorporated areas.
I have been elected to represent the SLV and Boulder Creek four times,
and I believe I know Boulder Creek and the issues that we need to work
together on, and I believe I have served the area well. However, we
face a series of new challenges, as the state continues to reduce
spending on local issues while at the same time, it is shifting more
and more ‘state’ responsibilities to the local communities (Counties).
So, I believe the fair question is; Who would you want to represent
you now? An individual who has had decades of experience representing
this local community, and working at the State level – with that
knowledge and experience, or someone who is less qualified? Our
county resources can easily be re-directed to doing the business of
the State, and that shift will make it even more difficult to do the
good things we need to do locally. Or, our Supervisor can fight for
our “fair share”, and can fight to keep the State from shifting more
and more resources away from our local needs and local agenda. I am
that person – the one with the experience and knowledge and clear
vision to “fight” for our fair share.
I have delivered for the 5th District throughout my career, and I want
to work for you again.

It’s a sad day for Boulder Creek. Last night the Brewery here had a catastrophic fire. Luckily no one was hurt and the fire was contained within the building.

Ramey White’s Arduous Journey Just Beginning
Can a story be heart-wrenching and heartwarming at the same time? Ramey White’s tale is both.
It began on Friday, January 23, when Boulder Creek resident Ramey White and his family were on a ski trip at Lake Tahoe for their six-year-old son Ryder’s birthday. But the next day, a devastating event occurred that would drastically change their lives.
On Saturday, Ramey spent the day teaching Ryder to ski. But when they returned to the car, Ramey told his fiancé, Lindsay Jamieson, that he could not feel his legs. That night, she massaged his legs, but he awoke in the middle of the night with excruciating pain and numbness.
Lindsey rushed Ramey to the nearest hospital, where doctors conducted a barrage of medical tests over the course of four agonizing days. The doctors finally determined that Ramey had been stricken with Guillian-Barre Syndrome (Ghee-yan Bah-ray) or GBS. GBS is an autoimmune disease that attacks a person’s nervous system, causing paralysis throughout the body, including the lungs. Recovery can take up to three years.
Ramey was then transferred to the Neurology Department at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, and was placed in the ICU, where he spent 18 nerve-racking days.

This last week, of this journey we call life, has been harder than anything I’ve ever had to endure. We are starting a blog to keep everybody who loves Ramey up to date on his progress.

Emily Ann Cress

Obituary
Boulder Creek and the Santa Cruz community have lost one of their finest. Emily Ann Cress passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz at the age of 86. She was born in Santa Cruz to Abraham Locatelli and Margherita Zanardi who were Italian immigrants. She was raised in Boulder Creek and remained a resident her entire life.
Emily graduated from Boulder Creek High School and attended Smith’s School of Business in Santa Cruz. She was a tireless worker and for over seventy-two years was the face that everyone knew at Johnnie’s Super Market. It is an amazing and remarkable truth that Emily worked almost every day at one place since the age of fourteen. Her dedication was unprecedented, and anybody who ever lived or worked in Boulder Creek probably knew of Emily.
Described by many as Boulder Creek’s unofficial historian, Emily remained actively involved in her community throughout her entire life. Over the years her club affiliations included the Lyons Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Fire Department, the Boulder Creek Golf Club, the Boulder Creek Museum, and the Italian Catholic Federation of Santa Cruz. Emily was also a member of the Marconi Club and enjoyed the club’s many bus trips to various places and the fellowship of friends. She never forgot Boulder Creek High School and every year joined with some of her classmates to celebrate their lifelong connections. She loved the company of family and friends and always remembered a face.
Beginning in 1888 there has been a handful of people responsible for collecting and reporting the annual rainfall data for Boulder Creek. Emily continued this work over fifteen years ago for her late husband George “Hoot” Cress. It has benefited the community of Boulder Creek for over a century.
Emily always enjoyed a good meal, especially at Scopazzi’s in Boulder Creek. She was a wonderful cook and always generous in her gifts of food. She was an avid sports fan and in her younger years enjoyed playing golf and swimming. She also enjoyed her yard which was always maintained meticulously.
Emily is survived by her brother Andrew J. Locatelli; sister-in-law Lois A. Locatelli; brother-in-law Charles F. Hughes; nephews James A. Hughes, David A. Hughes, Andrew J. Hughes, Mark J. Locatelli, and Tom R. Locatelli; niece Janet M. Hughes; and extended family and friends who will all miss her genuine and enthusiastic energy for life.
She was preceded in death by her parents Abraham Locatelli and Margherita Zanardi; her loving husband George Loughmiller “Hoot” Cress; and her sister Marie Locatelli Hughes.
Recitation of the Rosary and the Mass of the Resurrection for Emily Ann Cress will both be held in Boulder Creek. The rosary will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 7 p.m. Friends may pay their respects at a viewing to be held at the church on Sunday evening beginning at 5 p.m. The mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Monday, January 26, 2015 beginning at 10 a.m. The committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz. A reception to celebrate Emily will follow at Scopazzi’s Italian Restaurant in Boulder Creek. It will start at 1:30 p.m., and all friends and family are welcome and encouraged to attend. Any kind acts of charity can be made in Emily’s memory to the Boulder Creek Historical Society.
Emily Ann Cress was one-of-a-kind. We were blessed to have her in our lives for 86 years. She will be missed by family and friends although her spirit will always be present and will remain a part of the Boulder Creek community forever.
