SLV Museum – Crystals, Caves, & Kilns

SLV - 2014-04 Crystals

SLV Museums’ new exhibit Crystals Caves & Kilns is now open and will be on display through November 30th 2014. It explores the natural and cultural history of limestone, lime, and marble in our area. By visiting you will learn about the geologic history of our area and how marble caves form. The exhibit includes mineral and crystal specimens, 19th century artifacts, local historic photographs, and activities for the kids.

The exhibit was previously on display at Santa Cruz Natural History Museum, and is sponsored by that museum as well as SLV Water District and the Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District.

At the entrance of the exhibit is a reading cave for the kids with books about cave life. Kids can also add their cave story or drawings with materials that are provided. There is a rock and minerals lab table in the back of the museum, allowing kids to examine and make their own discoveries.

The exhibit also includes information about our local marble quarry, making cement, production of lime, getting lime to market, and the legacy lime has left behind. There is a video playing that talks about a recently discovered cave that is one of the largest in California, as well as the kind of life you find in caves. There are calcite crystals, limestone, marble, travertine, and tufa samples for you to look at up-close and personal. As well as how lime is part of our everyday lives, maps, and how caves need our help to preserve them.

This exhibit has a little bit for everyone and is packed with information. The museum is open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00noon till 4:00pm.

Where:       Historic Park Hall, 9400 Mill Street, Ben Lomond

Price:         $25 per person ($20 for SLV Museum members, students with ID, seniors 65+)

SLV Museum is having a fundraising lecture this Thursday from 7pm – 9pm at the Historic Park Hall in Ben Lomond.  Doors open at 6pm, so come on by and help support our local museum, and learn something about our local pride at the same time.

You will hear about a female writer who In the winter of 1900 sent a bold letter to the Santa Cruz Sentinel urging citizens to preserve the old growth redwoods in Big Basin. Just fifteen months later, the first California Redwood State became a reality. Dr. Traci Bliss will combine social, political, and family history to provide a fresh perspective on the Park’s creation, with emphasis on the unsung role of women. The Bliss family settled in Santa Cruz in the 1870’s. Jennie Bliss, the sister of Traci’s great grandfather, married William T. Jeter, lawyer, bank president and the first Democrat to be elected mayor of Santa Cruz. Through Jennie’s persistent urging, Jeter embraced the campaign to save the Big Basin Redwoods. Together with Andrew P. Hill, he forged a preservationist coalition of women’s groups, businessmen and academics.

Speaker Traci Bliss, an Emerita Professor and award winning educator holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Stanford and an MPA from the University of Texas at Austin. She serves as the President of the History Forum at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH). With San Lorenzo Valley historian, Randall Brown, she is the author of three chapters in the forthcoming MAH History Journal: Redwood Logging and Conservation in the Santa Cruz Mountains—A Split History. Bliss has been a docent at Henry Cowell Redwood State Park since 2009.
