Blackberry Brownies…easy one-pan mixing!

Tip from a thornless blackberry farmer in Bonny Doon: To pick the sweetest blackberries, choose the ones that look as though they are just separating and are a bit dull

2/3 cup veg oil or melted butter
3/4 cup cocoa powder
2 cups raw sugar
4 eggs
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 1/4 c unbleached flour (a dash less if using whole wheat)
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup fresh picked blackberries

Preheat oven to 350
Grease 13x9x2 baking dish
In medium saucepan warm oil, remove and add cocoa, sugar, eggs, and vanilla…in that order, stirring after each addition.
Add remaining ingredients, except blackberries. Stir until moistened.
Fold in blackberries. Pour into dish and bake 40 minutes. Cool for 20 minutes…if you can!

Where is Mike?

We’ve noticed flyers posted all over town by Tara McKenzie looking for a good samaritan named Mike.

According the the flyer Tara was in a car accident on Bear Creek Road near Byington Winery and Mike provided assistance. Tara would like to find Mike to “thank” him and also to see if he will make a bystander witness statement. The weird thing is that this accident occurred in August of 2007.

Boulder Creek Rec and Park Wins Statewide Award

Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District won the award for Outstanding Small District in the state by the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts (CARPD). This is a huge honor – Congrats to the Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District. “The Junction” is looking great and we’ve definitely noticed a change for the better there. Now families and kids enjoy the area instead of drinkers and tweakers! (well most of em have moved down to the dam).

The Boulder Creek Rec Hall also offers an impressive amount of great programs.

* Remodeled one facility and upgraded two parks
* Introduced 11 new special family events
* Dramatically increased facility usage, by at least 3 times

* Created a positive work environment for staff and instructors

*Made the parks safe and secure

Children’s Activities – Peanut Butter and Seed Pine Cones

Peanut Butter and Seed Pine Cones:
This is a simple activity, which involves few materials and the joy of watching birds and squirrels enjoy their treat.

Materials:
-Medium to large size pine cones
-Approximately 2′ of strong string or twine
-Peanut Butter
-Bird Seed
-Large Bowl or Tray
-Large Spatula

Directions:
-Attach the string around the cone securely by tying it, with a long lead to hang from a tree limb or some other type of apparatus.
-Pour the seed out onto a tray or into a large bowl.
-Using a spatula, spread the peanut butter all around the cone. You can cover it almost completely or just spread the peanut butter on the bottom.
-Roll the pine cone in the seed, covering and mashing the seed into the peanut butter.
-Create a slip knot on one end of the cone and hang it from a tree branch.

Birds will hang onto it and munch away.
