Spotlight – Sgt. Penguin’s

Logo-SgtPenguins

How did Sgt. Penguin’s come to be, you ask? Well, it is a very interesting string of events. Laurie Hennig was walking by the day the tenant of 12599 Highway 9 was moving out. They made an offer to the landlord that day, snatching up what is a wonderful location before it was ever put on the market.

So that explains how they got the location, but where did the name come from? Well they already had a large group of artists together (most of them family) and Lynn Markley was the leader of the group. One day as she was driving she heard Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on the radio and it just came to her, Sgt. Penguin’s Lively Arts Designs. Lynn has been collecting penguins forever and the whole idea just started rolling like a large snow ball down a hill. They wanted a gallery name that would capture the whimsical feeling of their art and they found the perfect one.

They wanted, and have created, a gallery that is funky, whimsical, and so Boulder Creek. This art gallery is not stuffy at all, it is fun and fresh. There are ceramics throughout that look like animals but are actually functional pieces of art by the Hennig’s. Watercolor paintings by Arline Anderson sit behind the front door. Acrylic paintings by Stephanie Allison are in every room that give us a glimpse into her dreams. Tile work is in the back room by Sam Markley who does custom orders. Stain glass work by Christine Moorhead is in the windows and a few lampshades in the store. The free flowing sculptures made out of found natural materials are made by Donna Stewman. Sprinkled throughout the store and complementing the art are collectibles and vintage items found by Lynn Markley also known as the Sgt. Penguin. The combination of art and vintage items gives the gallery a very lived-in and inviting feel. There are two chairs in the front for you to sit and lounge while you enjoy the art.

So what is in the future for the Sgt. Penguin’s? Lots, they chose this location because of it’s ample parking. Their vision is for this gallery to become a destination spot, kind of like Mountain Feed in Ben Lomond. They want to have a sculpture garden outside by summer time, possibly live music a few times a month, and maybe wine tasting in the future.

Boulder Creek Recs and Parks

NOTES from the Rec and Parks Board of Directors Meeting – September 4, 2013

Boulder Creek Recs and Parks

The following members were present:

Tess Fitzgerald
George Galt
Diana Hamilton
Kim Main

Brian Valdivia was absent from the meeting

The meeting lasted an hour and half. There was the agenda with 23 pages of documentation covering such things as expenses and revenue for August, as well as news and notices the board had received in August. These included items such as: the California Special Districts Association requesting a feedback form, LAFCO including a sphere of influence study dated 7/1/2013 and an agenda from their 8/7/2013 meeting.

NOTES

Junction park is going to have new signs to replace the ones that were stolen / vandalized. They are also looking at doing some improvements to the stairs to the beach.

Garrahan Park is going to have a pesticide treatment sometime in November a notice will be posted. The board was hoping they would not have to do this, and are planning to only do it once a year. There is currently a large problem with clover on the field which is attracting bees. I visited this park during a birthday party recently and the bees are a problem one child got stung while I was there. The board is hoping by doing it in November when it is less used and before the rainy season will limit the pesticides exposure to the environment and the general public.

Barbara Day Park is going to be having new signage as well stating no fishing with educational information about the river being a protected fishery, the populations and status of steelhead and coho as well as contact info for CDFW and or NOAA law enforcement. Continue reading

State park ranger asks mountain bikers help to catch arsonist

Below is information from cyclelicio.us . . .

Firefighters in Santa Cruz County have fought over a dozen human-caused fires along the Highway 9 corridor over the past month, and officials are asking the local mountain bike community to be especially vigilant for suspicious characters who may be intentionally setting these fires.

Henry Cowell State Park Ranger Gary Brennan sent a note to the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz asking cyclists and other trail users to look out for fires in the area. He says, “Henry Cowell State Park has been the site of over 12 vegetation fires. Investigators have examined all of these fires and determined that while several different causes were to blame, all were human caused. Some were intentionally set, some were the result of accidents but a majority were the result of illegal campfires left unattended.”

“I know none of your mountain bikers use the area,” he says with a nudge and a wink regarding the popular poached trails in the state park, “but we need all of the eyes we can get to catch the person or persons responsible for the fires. Report anything that is unusual such as illegal campsites in the park, individuals starting fires or acting suspiciously.”

Brennan asks that you call the arson tip line at (800) 468-4408 if you know anything about a possible arson fire. If you see a fire that is out of control or you see someone setting a fire, immediately call 911.

The fires so far have been relatively small, though challenging to fight because of the rugged terrain in this area. On Tuesday, fire crews staged at Twin Gates on Empire Grade Road, drove as far as they could on the Chinquapa Fire Road towards Pogonip, then hiked through poison oak with their fire fighting gear to fight the blaze creeping uphill from Highway 9. The steep terrain combined with an especially dry year in this area and a heavy fuel load can quickly lead to a catastrophic fire.
