BREAKING: Fire caused by discarded cigarette

The Boulder Creek Fire Protection District’s Kevin McClish has issued a statement regarding this morning’s fire at the Coldwell Banker office in downtown Boulder Creek. From his note:

This mornings fire at the Coldwell Banker building was caused by a discarded cigarette, in the alley under the stairs, between Coldwell Banker and the Oddfellows building. There is evidence in the area of people drinking, smoking, and possible sleeping in that area. . . .   If this fire had occurred at 3 am we would have lost several buildings.

Authorities have a pretty good idea who started the fire.  All local business owners are being encouraged to check the exterior of their buildings for evidence of people smoking, drinking or sleeping on their properties, and if  they have issues with this to notify the Sheriffs office.

A big thanks to Doug Conrad, Mark Kinder and Jim Walters who aggressively attacked the fire until the fire department arrived.

Boulder Creek Music Lives

Below is a note from Boulder Creek Music owners Ray Newkirk & Barry Tanner. If you have any instruments or music gear you’d like to sell, please bring them by the store. They’ve hit a big bump in the road, but are doing thier best to keep the shop open.

BOULDER CREEK MUSIC LIVES! 2-15-13 – By Ray Newkirk & Barry Tanner

Before too many rumors are spread lets quickly shed a little light on the life and death of Michael Aron (<not a typo) Smith and the status of Boulder Creek Music.

Yes, there was a Uhaul truck taking instruments from Boulder Creek Music on Tuesday & Wednesday, 2/12 & 2/13/13.  First, we are not closing our doors.

As most of you know, BC Music opened it’s doors 11/17/12. It was the dream of Michael Smith and Barry Tanner. Ray Newkirk jumped in as one of Santa’s elves because it seemed like a good idea.

Mike ran the Musician’s Trading Post on Ocean St about 25 years ago then got married , moved to Seattle, opened the Trading Musician, got divorced, opened Georgetown Music, ran that for 6 years then decided to move back to Boulder Creek, where his son, Marshall, had been born in 1989.

Since then, Mike took his own life at the end of a rope in Seattle (some call it suicide capital of the U.S.), presumably due to heavy financial woes, right after selling Georgetown Music to his ex-wife. As most of the equipment in BC Music came from Georgetown Music, much of it went back there because Marshall is rightful heir to Mike’s estate.

Valley Women’s Club: “The Butt Stops Here”

San Lorenzo Valley San Lorenzo Valley streets and waterways will be cleaner and safer thanks to four cigarette butt disposal containers installed by The Valley Women’s Club of the San Lorenzo Valley. Purchased with the assistance of a watershed education grant from the San Lorenzo Valley Water District and contributions from John Schumacher at Hallcrest Vineyards and other community sponsors, the receptacles are located at Boulder Creek Brewery & Cafe, Junction Park, Henfling’s Tavern and Don Quixote’s International Music Hall. Easy to spot, each bright red container bears the Butt Stops Here logo, created by Bonny Doon artist Stephanie Sellers Sakasai.

SLV Water District to host reception for former Board member Fred McPherson

The San Lorenzo Valley Water District invites the public to attend a reception in honor of former board member Fred McPherson on Friday, January 25, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the District Board Room, 13057 Highway 9, Boulder Creek.

Director McPherson, also a videographer and instructor of natural history at UC Santa Cruz, served on the Board for six years. He was first appointed in June 2006 to fill a vacancy left by former director David Ross and was then elected for a four-year term in 2008. He decided not to seek another term in 2012, in order to devote more time to nature videography, in partnership with his wife Roberta McPherson.

During McPherson’s watch, SLV Water District acquired the Felton water system from California-American Water in 2008, completed key watershed planning documents, and assumed an active role in addressing climate change.
