Open Studios THIS Weekend & NEXT

Open-Studios-2014_webOpen Studios is a way for the public to get a glimpse into the diverse world of the artists that live among us, and this year’s no exception. The San Lorenzo Valley has 22 artists participating this year Open Studios Art Tour sponsored by the Santa Cruz Art League. This year there are 10 in Boulder Creek, 8 in Felton, and 4 in Ben Lomond. Check out the artists below, get inspired, and maybe even purchase some art for your home or maybe a functional piece of art for daily life.

Saturday 10/11 & Sunday 10/12 from 11:00am – 5:00pm (all artists listed below)

Bikinis made in Boulder Creek featured in Sports Illusrated

Boulder Creek resident Chelsea Bell’s line of Bikinis are making waves.. in fact she had 4 of them featured in Sports Illustrated.  Wayne Freedman from KGO reports. From the article:

For Chelsea Bell, company headquarters has yet to expand beyond a couple of rooms in her Boulder Creek home. Instead, the world is coming to her. She designs what women want to wear and men want to see — bikinis, really small bikinis.

Artist Spotlight #7 – Jazzamanders

In preparation for the upcoming Boulder Creek Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, we will be featuring interviews with the performing bands. The Festival will be held March 9 and 10 at Scopazzi’s.

1.How do you describe your music or . . .  what style of music do you play?
A wide variety, acoustic

2.Who is in the band?
Barry Tanner, George Galt, Andy Robbins and Joy Rush. All from Boulder Creek

7:00 Friday at Scopazzi’s

4.Who are you influences?
Sir Francis Drake, Bill Walsh, (Maybe some Django too)

After many years of doing sound for this festival,I’m stoked to play! Hope to see all my BC and Bluegrass friends there. Friday night will be a great night of music!

Artist Spotlight #6 – The Driftless

In preparation for the upcoming Boulder Creek Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, we will be featuring interviews with the performing bands. The Festival will be held March 9 and 10 at Scopazzi’s.

1. How do you describe your music or . . .  what style of music do you play?
We draw from country blues, folk, old time, jug band, early jazz and bluegrass music, among other genres.  Our songs feature three-part harmonies, high lonesome fiddling, and intricate mandolin solos.   A fun part of the band is that all three members are prolific songwriters, and our originals are inspired by personal experiences, such as living in beautiful California landscapes, the travels we’ve taken and the people and animals who share our lives.

2. Who is in the band?
Megan Saunders – mandolin, banjo, vocals
Blair McLaughlin – fiddle, guitar, vocals
Nicole Campbell – guitar, fiddle, vocals

3. When and where are you playing at the Boulder Creek Bluegrass Festival?
Saturday, March 10th at 7:00pm at Scopazzi’s

4. Who are you influences?
In no particular order: Nina Simone, Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Minnie, Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin, The Carter Family, Tommy Jarrell, Lady Gaga, Bruce Molsky, Bill Monroe, The Decemberists, Tom Waits, The Blue Sky Boys, Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch, Ralph Stanley… honestly, the list could go on and on!

5. Is there a website people can visit to hear your music?

I will narrow it down to three:  Long Dark Highway (Saunders), Capay (McLaughlin), Oh No the Seasons (Campbell).

Artist Spotlight #5 – Jean Butterfield

In preparation for the upcoming Boulder Creek Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, we will be featuring interviews with the performing bands. The Festival will be held March 9 and 10 at Scopazzi’s.

1. How do you describe your music or . . .  what style of music do you play?
Acoustic Folkgrass, Inspirational storytelling Americana. I play guitar now and also the bass when I record. When I first started music I played fiddle then added bass. Much later came the guitar. Unfortunately I dropped the fiddle some years ago.

2. Who is in the band?
I currently play solo, but much of my experience has been with bands.

3. When and where are you playing at the Boulder Creek Bluegrass Festival?
I am playing at 5 pm for 30 min. (short set) on Saturday March 10, 2012 at Scopazzi’s Restaurant.

4. Who are you influences?
Folk and country style singers like Kate Wolf and Emmylou Harris, Blugrass pickers on Guitar: Doc Watson & Toni Rice, Fiddle: Byron Berline and Mark O’Conner.

5. Is there a website people can visit to hear your music?
http://www.jeanbutterfield.com. No live music yet, but have CD cover pics and list of songs to be recorded. The song I am attaching is the title to my first CD called “Brothers In Time”. It is an original like many of my songs.

6. Anything else you’d like to say to the fine people of Boulder Creek?
Come out and enjoy what this festival is bringing to your area! There is a lot of great music and some musicians have traveled a long way to be here – like myself. I am from the Yosemite area. Thank you for your support.

Artist Spotlight #4 – Faux Renwah

In preparation for the upcoming Boulder Creek Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, we will be featuring interviews with the performing bands. The Festival will be held March 9 and 10 at Scopazzi’s.

1. How do you describe your music or . . .  what style of music do you play?
We play Old Timey style, with the clawhammer banjo, fiddle and guitar, and write original music trying to emulate that style.

2. Who is in the band?
Cactus Bob Cole on fiddle, mandolin and guitar, Chris Stevenson, aka Prairie Flower playing banjo, guitar and bass fiddle.  We could have guests, Pegleg Reza playing ukulele and guitar and Muddy Barnes on guitar.

3. When and where are you playing at the Boulder Creek Bluegrass Festival?
Friday evening starting at 8 pm.

4. Who are you influences?
All the Old Timey bands from the 1920s and ’30s, especially Uncle Dave Macon.

5. Is there a website people can visit to hear your music?
Renwah.com is our web site, with some music there, and on Myspace under Cactus Bob & Prairie Flower or Faux Renwah.  Facebook is TooLoose Renwah.

6. Name one of your crowd-favorite tunes (please):
The Dead Horse Trampoline is our most requested song, also Einstein the Genius and Worthy of Estimation by Uncle Dave Macon.

7. Anything else you’d like to say to the fine people of Boulder Creek?
If you’re ready to party come on down!

Artist Spotlight #2 – The Down Beets

In preparation for the Boulder Creek Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, we will be featuring interviews with the performing bands. The Festival will be held March 9 and 10 at Scopazzi’s.

1. How do you describe your music or . . .  what style of music do you play?
We are a bluegrassish band that has a hint of country and new grass… sometimes rowdy, sometimes soft- but dynamic and unique.

2. Who is in the band?
Jeremy on mandolin and Jason Lampel on  banjo ( both formerly of Strungover), Sheila Golden on guitar, and Mike Luke on bass (who will not be at teh festival, Shea McKusick of the Harmony Grits will be filling in).

3. When and where are you playing at the Boulder Creek Bluegrass Festival?
Saturday night at 9pm

4. Who are you influences?
Martha Scanlan, The Reeltime Travelers, Gillian Welch, John Reischman and the Jaybirds,  Bill Monroe

Sheila, the lead singer in the band, lived in Boulder Creek for six years…. so she is semi-local!
